What makes baptism a non- essential or a secondary issue?

In past years many discussions have led of course to the topic of baptism. Where in N.T. scripture does it teach that baptism is a non-essential or a secondary issue?
...in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power...

My response is that baptism is not a non-essential or a secondary issue. While it is true we are saved by the blood of Christ (Rom. 5:9; Eph. 1:7), the question arises as to how the blood of Christ is contacted. Romans 6:1-11 shows that the blood of Christ is contacted in our being baptized. There are many other passages that talk about baptism and that is a part of our process of being saved. Therefore, baptism is essential.

Of course, there are many in religion who say that baptism is non-essential or secondary, but the Scriptures do not say that. The Bible clearly teaches that baptism is essential to our receiving the forgiveness of our sins. Just a few passages are Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38 and Acts 22:16.
